Pedal Prix

2011 News:
The new cars have arrived and 40 people came to check the cars out! Fun was had by all who took turns in pedalling around the Gym.  Special thanks to all the North families, teachers from the High School and Alex and Carol Moncrieff; who brought the cars down from Adelaide for supporting this fun afternoon.

On Friday September 16th 2011 we packed up our tents and crammed into the school bus. With our convoy of cars and parent helpers we set off to Murray Bridge once again. This amazing event with hundreds of cars and thousands of spectators is always exciting and a chance for our young people to put their “have a go” attitude to the test.

Our teams did not falter and both cars finished the 24 hours. Our teams peddled 20 more laps than we did last year. Well done! A student comment, “This is the best excursion I have ever been on!”

Opportunities like this are only possible because of the generosity of staff and families who give up their weekend and sleep.

Brad Tye and Wayne Foulds kept the cars humming along, while Malcolm Tirabassi and  Matt Dawe were marshalls. Karina Vanzati, Debra and Phil Bowd gave their support. Thanks too to Neil Lohmeyer and Peter Mitchinson. There is no overtime payment for teachers, this comes from the heart.

2009 News:

In September a team of riders tackled the Pedal Prix once again. Our aim was to do our personal best and to finish the race.

Our young team managers stepped up to leadership ensuring all their team members were safe and on time day and night.

Our nervous riders who had never been on a race track before were elated as they completed their first lap. I do believe however, that one of our riders let out an ear piercing scream as they met “crash corner” for the first time. What courage.

Despite lack of sleep and tired legs all of our young people used their ‘getting along’ key and cooperated throughout the event.  We could not have asked for a more generous and caring group of young people. For some, an important goal.

All children showed resilience as they recounted their adventures and crashes and coped with disappointment when their team had run out of time or their tiredness when woken up to race again.

Best of all however, was the fun and excitement we all had.

Can you guess who our surprise visitor was on the starting grid?
2007 News:

This year we have 25 aspiring riders who have cycled both at school and around the streets with support from Ms Ryan, Ms Reppin, Ms Bilney, Mr Millard and Mr Smith.

The team will be working with Mount Gambier High School on technical aspects.

The Ride2School event on the 30th March was a great success. Over 90 children brought their bicycles to school to participate in the events organised by the Pedal Prix team.

We are taking 15 riders to our first event at the Clipsal 500 track, Victoria Park, Adelaide on the 19th May.

Our team went to Adelaide on July 27th to compete in the six hour race at Victoria Park. We came 110th and had a lot of fun. "Crash Corner" lived up to its name with many cars rolling over at that point. We arrived back in Mount Gambier at 11 pm Sunday night.

Australian Human Powered Vehicle Super Series 2007

For the second time our school entered a Pedal Prix Car into the Australian Championships at Murray Bridge.  This is the major event in the series with around 3500 competitors and over 200 teams competing.  We had 17 dedicated riders pushing their bodies to the limit in this 24 hour team event.

Our Captain Jacob Ditcham started the race at 12pm Saturday. This continuing throughout the night and was planned to finish 12pm Sunday; however, due to stormy weather it was called to an early finish at 11am.

2006 News

Our school will be participating in the Pedal Prix 2006 with Mr Millard as Team Leader and Mr Leane as Publicity Officer. Our trike kit has arrived and we look forward to having our cars ready for the Adelaide 6 hour event and the Murray Bridge 24 hour event.

The team has been riding each Friday and they also engage in fitness activities to prepare themselves for the events.

We would like to thank the Mount Gambier Community for their generous donations and we hope to continue our fundraising with more raffles and a barbeque in term 2.

Dates to remember:

July 29th/30th at Adelaide International Raceway - Adelaide 6 hour event.

September 14th/17th: Murray Bridge -Murray Bridge 24 hour event.

Murray Bridge Event 2006

Mr Millard and his team of 16 students pedalled the "Flying Tadpole" continuously from 12 noon Saturday until 12 noon Sunday in relay. This event was part of the Australian Championship.

Despite mechanical problems, team members applied themselves over the 24 hours, achieving at least 20th place in our section and about 120th overall out of the 250 teams.

The event would not have been possible without the support of parents, Rick and Kym Clissold, who made sure we had adequate supervision on our weekly bike rides, and worked with Bruce Hamilton to build our cart. A fantastic team of helpers who kept up a great food and drink supply were capably led by Lauren and Peter Robson and included the O’Brien, Clode, Phipps, Clissold, Shane Gale and Ditcham families. Meanwhile, our cheer leading was regularly bolstered by friends and family who came along.

Under the leadership of Trevor Millard, the hard training, which the team have done over the course of the year really showed in the last six hours of the race as our drivers powered on to the end.

A wonderful experience was enjoyed by all and we are very proud of the way our students conducted themselves, and worked hard for the entire 24 hours. The next Pedal Prix event will be the Christmas Pageant.
