Intensive English Language Program (IELP) and New Arrivals Program (NAP)

Our Intensive English Language Program (IELP) and New Arrivals Program (NAP) provide intensive English language support for students from reception to year 12. Students with a language and cultural background other than English who have limited or minimal English are eligible to enrol within their first 12 – 18 months of arrival. Children with minimal English who are outside the above criteria may be eligible to enrol in IELP/NAP if approved by the IELP Program Manager.

Students usually stay in the IELP/NAP for up to 12 or 18 months, or longer if needed. Bilingual School Services Officers (BSSOs) and Community Liaison Officers (CLOs) are also available to support families and students.

Classes are small and organised by age. Students access a modified curriculum focussing on learning English as well as the core content of each curriculum area. Students are supported to integrate into mainstream classes through a variety of activities within the school and local community, including excursions and social events. Continuous assessments are undertaken and parents are advised when their children are ready to leave IELP/NAP to join mainstream classes. When students exit IELP/NAP, a Transition Program is organised so students can successfully continue their education in their chosen mainstream school with ease.
